The script scoffs at the idea that power and prosperity come to those who merit them, even when it is dealing with Dorothy herself. True, we can’t take anything the “humbug” Wizard says too seriously, but these are radical sentiments to hear in any Hollywood film, let alone a Hollywood film aimed at children. War veterans are mocked as people who “take their fortitude out of mothballs and parade it down the main street of the city” once a year, but “have no more courage than you have”. Academics and philanthropists are derided. I don’t know how it works!” There aren’t many films that show politicians being quite as brazenly incompetent as that.īefore the Wizard disappears, he hands the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) and the Tin Man (Jack Haley) their suitably gimcrack prizes – a scroll, a medal and a clock – while assuring them that they are as accomplished as anyone “back where I come from”. In a gloriously gonzo final flourish, he floats off into the sky with a cheerful cry of: “I can’t come back. He admits that he ended up in the land of Oz when his hot air balloon was blown there – and even that balloon is beyond his control. Another film might have contrasted this earthbound huckster with the genuine marvels performed by the wonderful Wizard of Oz, but in this one the wizard is played by the same actor as Professor Marvel, and he turns out to be much the same character: a fast-talking fairground showman who hides behind a curtain, waggling levers, and using mechanical trickery to keep his subjects loyal and afraid. As kindly as he is, the professor is a con artist who pretends to be psychic by peeking at a photo Dorothy is carrying. Having run away from her home in Kansas to stop her pet dog Toto being put down, Dorothy meets a travelling clairvoyant named Professor Marvel (Frank Morgan) – a character who isn’t in L Frank Baum’s source novel, but was created by screenwriters Noel Langley, Florence Ryerson and Edgar Allan Woolf. In the sepia opening scenes, we are warned that the magic we’re about to see might not be wholly magical. But it upends the conventions of good-v-evil storytelling in ways that would have had Walt Disney fuming. The pig-tailed Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) is so wholesome, the Harburg and Arlen songs are so delightful, and the Technicolor adventures are so exciting that it’s still easy to mistake The Wizard of Oz for traditional family entertainment, 80 years on from its release in August 1939. In the trio’s moaning and blubbing as they prepare to sneak into the witch’s castle, you can see a foreshadowing of Westley, Inigo and Fezzik invading Humperdinck’s castle in The Princess Bride. In the clanking of the Tin Man’s rusty limbs, you can hear echoes of Don Quixote’s home-made armour. None of them is what you’d call a handsome prince. Just look at the trio of frightened and feeble misfits that accompanies its heroine along the yellow brick road. Is When Harry met Sally the greatest romcom ever?īut for all of its similarities to the Disney film, MGM’s version was more of an anti-fairy tale than a fairy tale. It went on to be cinema’s biggest hit of 1938, a success that not only encouraged Disney to make other fairy-tale cartoons for decades to come, but also encouraged another studio, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, to try its own fantasy musical about an orphaned girl and a wicked witch: The Wizard of Oz. ![]() She considered suing, but opted against it “for the very simple reason that I wanted to work again. In December 1937, Walt Disney Productions released its first feature-length cartoon, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It took her six weeks to recover-but even then, the nerves in her hand were still so exposed that she had to wear green gloves rather than makeup. Incredibly, the studio called Hamilton the next day wondering when she would return to set. “That was always amazing to me, that the studio didn’t send me home in a limousine,” the actor later recalled. Incapacitated, a friend had to pick her up from the movie studio. The eyelashes and eyebrow on her right eye had been burned off her upper lip and eyelid were badly burned.” When she looked down, her skin had been burned off her hand. According to Harmetz’s book, the flames caught on her broom and hat, “scalding her chin, the bridge of her nose, her right cheek, and the right side of her forehead. While filming the scene in which the witch disappears in a flash of smoke, the effects crew started their fire before actor Margaret Hamilton had enough time to safely exit the stage. ![]() ![]() Fang (2011) compared Legge, Morrison, Marshman, and Lin’s versions from the perspective of functional translation theory. Wang and Ye (2008) suggested the socio-political setting of the time largely accounts for Morrison’s literal translation. Wang (2005), for example, analyzed Pound’s etymographic interpretation in his translation. The English translation of Daxue has prompted investigations from various perspectives but they have primarily focused on one particular version. So far, there have been approximately 18 important English versions of Daxue, as shown in Table 1. Its predominant position has made Daxue highly important and translated into various languages over the ages. It is only due to the preservation of this work that the order in which the ancients pursued their learning may be seen at this time” ( Chan, 1963, p. The Neo-Confucian of the Song Dynasty Cheng Yi (1033–1107) viewed Daxue as the entry point for the study of the Four Books: “ The Great Learning ( Daxue) is a surviving work of the Confucian school and is the gate through which the beginning student enters into virtue. Short as it is, the aim of Daxue is to produce an ideal political program based on an individual’s moral cultivation. Zhu Xi’s commentary edition of Daxue was one of the most important texts for education and the civil service examinations in China’s feudal society and had a profound influence on Chinese intellectuals for hundreds of years. After the edition and rearrangement by Zhu Xi (1130–1,200), the renowned Chinese scholar of the Song Dynasty, it gained its position as an independent “book” and was canonized as one of the so-called Four Books along with Lunyu (《论语》, The Analects), Zhongyong (《中庸》, The Doctrine of the Mean), and Mengzi (《孟子》, Mencius). The Chinese classic Daxue (《大学》, The Great Learning) was originally a section of Liji (《礼记》 The Book of Rites), an anthology of treatises on rituals which came into shape around the first century BCE. It is hoped that the results of this research will contribute to an enhanced understanding of the translation and overseas dissemination of the Chinese classic Daxue, and further the study of the translator’s voice with the aid of corpus technology. ![]() This study demonstrates that the translator’s voice, which is always present along with the author’s voice and may take various forms, is deeply associated with the cultural and ideological constructs in which the act of translation is embedded. The findings suggest that each translator’s cultural identity, historical background, and motives for producing the translation are made manifest through various linguistic and non-linguistic choices. ![]() ![]() Paratexts of translation-prefaces, introductions, translator’s notes, footnotes, and so on, as well as representative examples, were also analyzed by close reading. WordSmith 8.0, CLAWS POS Tagger, and Readability Analyzer were used to analyze the data and investigate the lexical, syntactic, and textual features of the translations of Daxue by David Collie, James Legge, Ku Hungming, Ezra Pound, Chan Wing-Tsit, and Andrew Plaks, respectively. This study is based on a self-constructed bilingual parallel corpus which adopts both quantitative and qualitative methods to reveal the translator’s voice in six English versions of the Chinese classic Daxue. By tracing a set of textual cues, the translator’s voice embedded in the discourse may come to light. The Translator’s voice is the “second” voice in a translated narrative. More often than not, the tribes would struggle for what limited supplies and resources were available. The land allotted to tribes was often rejected by settlers. Those who survived the trip would face new hardships. Relocation itself was a tragic undertaking for tribes. The tribes in what is now Chicago and the Great Lakes area would feel the brunt of many land cessations and several relocation efforts over the coming years after this. This would mean the relocation of tens of thousands of indigenous people still living east of the river.
