But if you did attack me, you're losing Arnor (in the above example). Instead, I simply indicate my intentions- i.e: I have no interest in attacking you next turn, but feel free to attack me. One trick is to sign less truces, less deals, since it can turn your match into a 2v2. I think I was close to top income with Fortress spawn included. I had a lot of Fortresses too, which casual players don't include when calculating the relative strengths. He then used all that income to fight the other 2 players, and it became a 1v2 between those 3, while I hoarded with the 'lowest income.' But. I will even go so far as to actively improve the other players incomes, for example I recently negotiated to give someone Arnor since I was his only major threat, pushing him over the top. I always try to stay in 2nd or 3rd highest income as the name of the game in 4 player FFA is to avoid conflict. Something about sea invasions just feels cool, I always see people spamming attacks between Umbar, Mithlond, Dol Amroth, Rohan's port, and the one in the red country (Arnor I think). Casual players seem to think it's cute to sea invade using the sea routes so the Western countries are far more difficult to hold. The east part of the map is much more defensible due to not having sea routes. You can often increase your city count here even if people won't let you conquer either country fully, you'll get a few extra troops from city count. In all my games, Arnor and Rhovanian are often ignored, people discount them as being too difficult to defend, which is true. ![]() ![]() Rhun has too many entrances but this makes it so less desirable that people often leave you alone there. The smaller income countries are surprisingly good- Rhun, Umbar, Mordor, are nice. If this happens I try to snipe a corner country- generally Rhun and Mirkwood. I often see a Mordor/ Harad player, versus Rohan player that is trying to get Gondor. I rarely get Mordor due to RNG but if I start off with 1 or 2 cities in there and nobody counter spawns me too hard I will put my full starting army in Mordor + a few defenders on any starting Fortresses elsewhere.Īs you say, next best position is generally Rhun and Mirkwood, since others generally avoid this area due to it being perceived as being too open to attack, plus only having 1 juicy Fortress to attract competition. It depends on if your play group counter-spawns where you spawn though, I wouldn't throw your starting army against someone else's starting army just to get Mordor. From Mordor it's easy to deny Gondor and conquer Harad, if you can conquer Umbar early then turtle there until you have Mordor and can sweep Harad/ East Gondor you should be in an extremely strong position, with only 3 chokepoints to hold- 2 of which will be fortresses. Basically similar idea as Australia in original but it has more income than many larger countries. Plus, having a fortress on each entrance is amazing. Mordor is super good, with 3 fortresses you get a total of 5 income for holding it. If I can get 4 fortresses by end of my first turn I feel like I'm in a good position- thats a total of 7 income with just your minimum city income. ![]() I'll put an extra 1 troop from my starting forces in all starting Fortresses I own, plus a set of 3 or 4 adjacent to any fortresses provided the opponent also isn't spawning in that fortress that they started with. These will spawn all game and eventually you'll have a decent stack on each fortress, even if you can't conquer many countries. Since players often focus on conquering the smaller countries first, Minas Tirith, Moria, and Rivendell are often open without massive armies there early game. Last game we dealt 7 cities randomly per player, then took turns placing on vacant cities to fill out the map.Įarly game I always focus on getting all Fortresses possible. If we're playing 4 players, we leave those regions empty and everyone understands that attacking an empty region means there's 2 neutral troops there that need to be rolled for.Īnother rule I like is to only randomize partially, then we take turns placing in vacant cities. ![]() I like to play with a house rule for some neutral provinces to be randomized, with them starting with an assumed 2 troops each. I often don't play with leaders which may impact this, since without cards you would have 1 leader and this incentivizes attacking. All of my strategy is contingent on you playing with fortress ruleset, with 1 free troop spawning on each fortress per turn, and also +1 on your highest dice roll when defending a fortress from an attacker. ![]()
